Dhamma Chakka Pawaththana Suthraya

Sangyuththe Nikaya– Maha Wagga Pali- Sachcha Sanyuththaya-
Please remember that this is the sutra where the power of dharma was first declared to all beings in all realms by Gauthama Buddha.

I have heard:

Once upon a time, the Blessed One lived in Migada~ya in Isipathana, Varana~si. One day, the Blessed One addressed the five monks.

“Monks, there are two extremist ways of life that priests should not follow and are unsuitable for association.”

Which two extremes?

That is to say, one ascetic nature is the way of living their precious human life uselessly and meaninglessly by being attached and clung to certain lusts and intoxicated by them similar to the lays.

The other is the way of living uselessly and meaninglessly by giving unnecessary suffering to the body.

Monks, if thus a monk does not reach these two extremes but lives according to the central principle that ‘Thathahgatha’ has understood, he will be able to cultivate the necessary wisdom for pacifying defilements – for knowing and wisely seeing the Four Noble Truths – for understanding the Four Noble Truths – for accomplishing the ‘Nirwana’.

Monks, what is the middle ground that cultivates the wisdom or the insight for pacifying defilements, for knowing and wisely seeing the Four Noble Truths, for understanding the Four Noble Truths, for accomplishing the ‘Nirwana’ comprehended by the ‘Thathagatha’?

This central principle is the Noble Eightfold Path.

What is that?
Samma~ Dittih, Samma~ Sangkappa, Samma~ Wa~cha~,
Samma~ Kammantha, Samma~ A~ji~va,
Samma~ Va~ya~ma, Samma~ Sathi, Samma~ Sama~dhi.

Monks, this is the middle ground that cultivates the wisdom or the insight for pacifying defilements, for knowing and wisely seeing the Four Noble Truths, for understanding the Four Noble Truths, for accomplishing the ‘Nirwana’ comprehended by the ‘Thathagatha’.

“Monks, this is the Noble Truth of Suffering, called ‘Dukkha A~rya Sathya’.

  • Birth is a misery,
  • Getting old or decaying is also a misery,
  • Being sick is also a misery,
  • Death is also a misery,
  • Associating with the unloved is also a misery,
  • Separation from loved ones is also a misery,
  • If there is anything we wish for but cannot get, it is also a misery.
    In brief, all of the ‘Pakncha Upa~da~naskandhas‘ (Grasping the five elements of thought with ignorance) is a misery”.

“Monks, this is the Noble Truth of the cause for the suffering, called ‘Dukkha Samudaya A~rya Sathya’.

Is there any desire, a clinging, a passion, or an attachment for the Sensual pleasure that causes births repeatedly and attachments to particular existences,

It is the

  • Ka~ma Thna~ – Craving for Sensual Pleasure
  • Bhava Thanha~ – Craving of Existence (becoming or possessing)
  • Vibhava Thanha~ – Craving of Non-Existence (not becoming or not possessing), and these are the root causes of suffering.”

“Monks, this is the Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering, ‘Dukkha Nirodha A~rya Sathya’.

If there is any annihilation of that Craving without leaving behind even a little – any elimination – any complete removal – any liberation – any abandonment of love, for someone or something – it is the getting rid of sorrow”.

“Monks, this is the Noble Truth of the path that should be followed to end the suffering, called ‘Dukkha Nirodha Ga~mini Patipada~ A~rya Sathya’.

That is the Noble Eightfold Path.

What is that?

  • Samma~ Dittih – Knowing wisely of the right and good path
  • Samma~ Sangkappa – Determining to follow the right and good purpose
  • Samma~ Wa~cha~ – Use of good words
  • Samma~ Kammantha – Committing moral deeds by the mind and body
  • Samma~ A~ji~va – Maintaining a righteous lifestyle and a livelihood
  • Samma~ Wa~ya~ma – Practising diligently to get rid of defilements completely that leads a righteous and good life
  • Samma~ Sathi – Establishing the correct good conscience to understand the true nature of one’s body, mind, sensations and inner wisdom.
  • Samma~ Sama~dhi – Concentrating the mind on the right and good purpose to eliminate suffering by freeing from Craving completely.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “This is the Noble Truth of Suffering”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “One must understand this Noble Truth of Suffering clearly and wisely”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “I have already understood this Noble Truth of Suffering clearly and wisely”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “This is the Noble Truth of the cause of the suffering”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “One must eliminate this Noble Truth of the cause of the suffering, must get rid of it”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “I have already eliminated this Noble Truth of the cause of the suffering, I was freed from it”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “This is the Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying,“One must achieve this Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering by understanding wisely”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying,“I have already achieved this Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering by understanding wisely”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “This is the Noble Truth of the path which one should follow to end the suffering”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “One must follow this path of the cessation of suffering with great vigour until accomplished the final fruit with established pure conscious and wise understanding”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

Monks, A knowledge I had never heard of before saying, “I have already completed this path of the cessation of suffering with great vigour until I have accomplished the final fruit with established pure conscious and wise understanding”, emerged. An awareness occurred, wisdom occurred, insight occurred, comprehension occurred, and realisation occurred – The glory occurred.

‘Monks, until I accomplished these Four Noble Truths perfected them in twelve ways, including three steps each one by one, I have not asserted to the worlds of Gods-Brahma-Mara or community of human-god with monks, ascetics that “I have attained the perfect Buddhahood”.

Monks, I have accomplished these Four Noble Truths by perfecting them in twelve ways, including three stages, each one by one. Therefore, I assert to the worlds of Gods-Brahma-Mara or community of human-god with monks and ascetics that “I have attained the perfect Buddhahood”.

“I have understood reality through wisdom. As I have freed the mind irrevocably and totally from ‘Greed- Hatred- Delusion’, this will be my last birth. Now I have no rebirth”.

The Blessed One said as such.

The five monks with happy minds have accepted the Blessed One’s sermon with joy.

Monks, the Dharma Eye or the wisdom of ‘Sowan’, which directs the way to remove all defilements, occurred to venerable Kondaknkna was, by understanding that “whatever arises, it is subject to cease”.

When the Blessed One declared the commandment of the Dharma,

Gods ‘Bumatu’ who associate with the ground have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by a monk or an ascetic or a god or a Mara or a Brahma or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Bumatu’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Chathu Maharajika’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Chathu Maharajika’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Thavathingsa’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Thavathingsa’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Yama’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Yama’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Thusitha’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Subhakinhaka’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Vehapphala’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Vehapphala’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Aviha’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Aviha’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Athappa’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Athappa’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Sudassa’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Sudassa’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Sudassi’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Hearing the sound of Gods ‘Sudassi’ rejoicing, Gods in ‘Akanittahka’ have rejoiced loudly with great honour that the Blessed One has preached the commandment of the Dharma at Migadaya, Isipatana in Varanasi that could not be equalled by anything and also could not be preached by any monk or any ascetic or any god or any ‘Mara’ or any ‘Brahma’ or anyone else in the world.

Thus, at that very moment, in an instant, the rejoicing sound rose to Brahma realms.

Thus, tens of thousands of worlds were shocked. Very shocked. They trembled very fast. An immeasurable light that exceeded God’s divine inspiration spread throughout all the realms.

At that time, the Blessed One uttered a phrase of joy,

“Venerable Kondaknkna has certainly understood. Venerable Kondanya comprehended with certainty.”

From then, the monk Kondaknkna got the name “Aknkna Kondaknkna”.
