Anguththara Nikaya- Chathukkanipatha Pali- Paththakamma Waggaya
Remember, this is the Sutra that includes guidance from the Buddha pointing out how to be protected from reptiles by radiating Loving-Kindness on them.
Thus, I have heard,
While the Buddha was staying at Jethawanarama in the city of ‘Sawath’, a monk from ‘Sawath’ died after being bitten by a snake.
Soon after, a group of monks approached the Buddha and sat beside him.
The monks who sat down addressed the Buddha as follows.
“Lord, a monk in this City died because of a snake bite”, and so on.
Monks, he did not radiate Loving-Kindness to the snakes of the serpent kingdom’s four castes.
He would not have died from a snake bite if he had radiated Loving-Kindness to the snakes of the serpent kingdom’s four castes.
What are the four castes of snakes?
‘Virupakkha’ caste of snake
‘E~ra~pathah’ caste of snake
‘Chahbya~puththa’ caste of snake
‘Kanha~gothamaka’ caste of snake
He did not radiate Loving-Kindness to the snakes of the serpent kingdom’s four castes.
He would not have died from a snake bite if he had radiated Loving-Kindness to the snakes of the serpent kingdom’s four castes.
“Monks, I will show you how to receive protection and sanctuary as well as discipline your senses by radiating Loving-Kindness to these four Snake castes”.
I am radiating loving- kindness to the creatures of the ‘Virupakkha’ caste of snakes,
I am radiating loving- kindness to the creatures of the ‘E~ra~pathah’ caste of snakes,
I am radiating loving- kindness to the creatures of the ‘Chahbya~puththa’ caste of snakes,
I am radiating loving- kindness to the creatures of the ‘Kanha~gothamaka’ caste of snakes,
I am radiating loving- kindness to all the legless creatures,
I am radiating loving- kindness to all the two-legged creatures,
I am radiating loving- kindness to all the four-legged creatures,
I am radiating loving- kindness to all the creatures with many legs,
Let me not be harmed by any creature with no legs!
Let me not be harmed by any two-legged creatures!
Let me not be harmed by any four-legged creatures!
Let me not be harmed by any creature with many legs!
All beings who are attached to the ‘Sansara’,
All living creatures,
All Inhumans, and all the rest of the creatures,
May they have no sinful thoughts!
May they only think good thoughts!
The attributes of the ‘Buddha’ are infinite!
The attributes of the ‘Dhamma’ are infinite!
The attributes of the ‘Sanggha’ are infinite!
From the countless creeping creatures,
From scorpions, Centipedes, Leschenault’s snake-eye, rats,
I have got the protections.
I have got the sanctuary.
May the fear caused by defilements be eliminated from me!
I worship that Buddha!
I worship the Seven Buddhas!
