Khuddaka Nikaya- Suththanipatha Pali- Chula Waggaya
Remember that this Suthra was preached by Gauthama Buddha, referring to an incident that happened in Kasyapa Buddha’s time to answer a question: “Is non-vegetarian food allowed for Buddha and his disciples?”
Being dimensionless and conscious, priests like you consume only various grains, roots, fruits, and so on.
You do not lie because of your likes and dislikes.
Here, Kashyapa is sitting hunched over at the base of a tree, eating the food offered by others that is clean, well-prepared, delicious and fishy-odoured, without hiding.
Even though a Brahmin like me says that the fishy-odour meaty food is not suitable for you, Kashyapa is sitting at the base of this tree and eating clean, delicious, fishy-odour, and well-prepared food without hiding.
I am questioning Kashyapa, to know how that fishy-odour meaty food is appropriate for you.
The Kashyapa Buddha
Torturing, Persecuting, Punishing, Imprisoning, Stealing, Cunningness, inferior acts of deception, and attitudes of wanting to have sexual relations with other people’s husbands and wives, etc.; the actions with such practices are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
The impure, inferior nature of undisciplined people who cling to sensual pleasure, being greedy in the taste of lust.
The mythic standpoint that rejects rebirth and consequences of one’s own acts (repercussions)
The obstinacy with anomalous, rough, evil ideas that cannot be understood no matter how much he is explained, etc., such practices are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
The rough, evil nature of praising someone when being with them but criticising them when not being with them,
Betraying friends,
Being unkind due to excessive arrogance,
Not supporting the virtuous with alms and donations, etc., such practices are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
Being angry and loss of conscious due to stubbornness
Pretending friendliness that does not exist-
Pretending to have good qualities that do not possess-
Being jealous-
frequent heedless talking, etc., such inferior qualities
Pride and arrogance
associating with unsuitable people, and so on.
such practices are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
Incurring debt and committing evil actions because of being immoral,
Committing fraud and cunning trade by these vile people because of their bad situations,
As well as spreading gossip, etc.,
such crimes are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
Behaving immorally in a way oppressing others because of not being disciplined.
Being sinful, evil, stubborn, and not respecting others, etc., such practices are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
Having the desire to kill the opponents,
Possessing the ignorant obstinacy belief that he has an eternal soul and will not be changed even after death.
Having greedy-hateful thoughts that cause him to fall into hell, where they will have to spend in misery, etc., those are stinky, but meaty food does not stink.
Abstaining from eating meat, fish, and eggs,
Staying naked as a virtue,
Shaving one’s own head as a virtue,
Covering one’s hair with headwear as a virtue,
Being in a river or body of water,
Wearing rough clothes, such as clothes made of dark leopard skins,
Performing Sacrificial or offerings to any worldly objects or fires, etc., such austere actions that are performed by inflicting pain on the body do not help the creatures (humans) to escape death.
There is no doubt that the human who purifies himself through the liberation gained through wisdom transcends the ‘Sansara’.
The mild-mannered and straightforward-purposed wise one behaves by disciplining his senses by understanding the temporary pleasure and perpetual misery of the defilements caused by the images or objects that come into contact with his senses.
As he dwells according to the Dhamma, he does not cling to anything he hears or sees and is free from all suffering by getting rid of attachments.
So, in order to go beyond comprehension, understand this Dhamma by knowing what the Buddhas of the past, present, and future have preached time and time again.
Those string of ornate stanzas were uttered by the Buddha, who understood what was difficult to understand, was not associated with Craving- Obstnacy, and removed the defilements that caused the stench of fish.
After hearing the well-preached Dhamma stanzas, that inferior-minded person worshipped, bowing to the blessed one, who had eliminated the stinky “Craving- Obstinacy- Arrogance” in him.
Right there, at that moment, he desired to enter the monastic life.
