Khuddaka Nikaya

Bodhi Suthraya

Khuddaka Nikaya- Udana Pali- Bodhi Waggaya
This is a combination of three suthras, Pathama Bodhi-Duthiya Bodhi-Tathiya Bodhi in Bodhi Waggaya.
Remember that this is the sutra where the Buddha reminded how he first understood the Paticcha Samuppada and expressed a happy verse about it.

Thus, I have heard.
During the first few days when the Blessed One attained Sambodhi, he lived at the Bodhi Root near the Neranjana River in Uruwela.
At that time, the Blessed One sat in the same posture for seven days, enjoying the healing of liberation.

Then, on the night of the seventh day, the Blessed One stood up from the meditation of concentrated mind he had been until then.

In the first part of the night, he carefully contemplated how the mind arises due to the clinging with greed.

Thus, his existence occurs when having the thought of “this is me”.

How is that-

Due to ignorance of the true nature, thoughts are formed in the dimension of “I-Mine-My soul”.

Due to the dimension of “I-mine-my soul” formed, the specially captured “I-myself” mind is formed.

Due to that “I-mine” mind, the corresponding image is formed.

Due to that Image, the corresponding senses are formed.

Due to those senses and their nature of pursuing sensory pleasure, they tend to come into contact with external or internal images. Therefore, linking exists.

Due to the linking with images, seeing-hearing-smelling-tasting-feeling-memorising activate.

Due to seeing-hearing-smelling-tasting-feeling-memorising, the Craving pops up.

Due to that Craving, clingings-conflicts occur with external or internal images upon the previously specially grasped thoughts (Cognition) created with “Greed- Hatred- Delusion” influenced by “I-mine-my-soul”.

Due to those bonds caused by clingings-conflicts, the thoughts of existences, ‘possessing- becoming- abandoning-separating’, etc. arise.

Due to those existences of thoughts, the birth occurs.

Due to that birth, many forms of suffering, such as aging-sickness-death-mourn-lament- melancholy-agony-torment-discomforts-dominus–exertion to escape calamities have to be experienced.

This is how all of his suffering stems.

Then, the Blessed One expressed happily about what he understood by knowing wisely.
“At one time, the wise one who contemplates wisely, again and again, to overcome the defilements at the very moment of their emergence with great vigour is certainly liberated from those defilements.
Then, he looks at everything suspiciously and is inquisitive wisely.

He who has disciplined his senses especially understands the reason for his existence”.

Then, in the middle part of the night, the Blessed One wisely contemplated very neatly, step-by-step, how the mind or ‘Patichcha Samuppadaya’ cease when the Craving is ceased.

Thus, when there is no mind of “this is me”, there is no reason to exist ‘Craving- Obstinacy- Arrogance’. Therefore, his extinction occurs.
How is that?

From the moment one realises the true nature, the formation of thoughts in the dimension of “I-Mine-My soul” is ceased.

Since the formation of thoughts in the dimension of “I-Mine-My soul” ceases, the formation of the mind that causes to grasp as “I-mine” is ceased.

Since the formation of the mind that causes to grasp as “I-mine” ceases, the formation of the corresponding image is ceased.

Since the formation of the image ceases, the formation of the corresponding senses is ceased.

Since the formation of the senses ceases, the linking with external or internal images is ceased.

Since the linking ceases, the activation of seeing-hearing-smelling-tasting-feeling-memorising is ceased.

Since the activation of seeing-hearing-smelling-tasting-feeling-memorising ceases, the Craving is ceased.

Since the Craving ceases, the bonds that are created upon the previously specially grasped thoughts (Cognition) formed with “Greed- Hatred- Delusion” influenced by “I-Mine-my soul” are ceased.

Since the bonds cease, the thoughts of existences, ‘possessing- becoming- abandoning-separating’, etc., are ceased.

Since the thoughts of existences, ‘possessing- becoming- abandoning-separating’ etc., cease, the birth is eradicated.

Since birth eradicates, all the forms of suffering, such as aging-sickness-death-mourn-lament- melancholy-agony-torment-discomforts-dominus–exertion to escape calamities are eradicated.

In this way, all his miseries are eradicated.

Then, the Blessed One expressed happily about what he understood by knowing wisely.

“At one time, the wise one who contemplates wisely, again and again, to overcome the defilements at the very moment of their emergence with great vigour is certainly, liberated from those defilements.
Then, he looks at everything suspiciously and is inquisitive wisely.

He who disciplined his senses gets rid of sensations by gradually eradicating the causes of the occurrence of defilements”.

Then, in the final part of the night, the Blessed One wisely contemplated very neatly, step-by-step, how the ‘Patichcha Samuppadaya’ arises and ceases.

“At one time, the wise one who contemplates wisely, again and again, to overcome the defilements at the very moment of their emergence with great vigour is certainly liberated from those defilements.
Then, he looks at everything suspiciously and is inquisitive wisely.

He who has disciplined his senses is eradicated by quenching the fire of defilements ‘Greed- Hatred’, glories like the sun that illuminates the sky”.
