Sangyuththa Nikaya-Sagathawagga Pali- Sakka Sangyuththaya- Patama Waggaya
Remember, this is the suthra that Buddha has preached, pointing out the virtue and inspirational qualities of Three Jewels called ‘Buddha- Dhamma- Sanggha’.
I have heard,
When the Blessed One was dwelling at Jethawanaramaya in the City of ‘Sawath’, one day, the Blessed One addressed the monks as “monks”.
“Yes, Blessed One”, the monks Replied.
“Monks, once upon a time, the gods and the Asuras (Asura is an existence of mixed appearance and qualities of gods and ghosts) were at war.
At that time, God Sakra addressed the gods in heaven called ‘Thavathingsa’ and said,
‘During this war, if you feel any fear, panic or shock, gaze at my flag. If you stare at my flag, your fear, panic or shock will disappear.’
‘If you do not gaze or see my flag then gaze at the flag of God, ‘Prajapathi’. Thus, by looking at God, Prajapathi’s flag, your fear, panic or shock will disappear.’
‘If you do not gaze or see God, Prajapathi’s flag then gaze at the flag of God, ‘Waruna’. Thus, by looking at the flag of God, Waruna’s, your fear, panic or shock will disappear.’
‘If you do not gaze or see God, Waruna’s flag then gaze at the flag of God ‘I~sana’. Thus, by looking at the flag of God I~sana’s, your fear, panic or shock will disappear.’
“However, Monks, even if anyone gazes at God Sakra’s flag, God Prajapathi’s flag, God Waruna’s flag, or God I~sana’s flag, there is no such kind of ability for them to eliminate one’s fear, panic or shock.
What is the reason for that?
Monks, God Shakra has not banished Greed, has not banished Hatred, has not banished Delusion.
As a result, they are the ones that are frightened, anxious, shaken, and will flee”.
“Therefore, I say to you, remember the virtues that I have cultivated when you are in a forest, at the base of a tree, or in a deserted area if you feel any fear, panic, or terror.”
- ‘Because the blessed one entirely cleansed himself by banishing defilements of ‘Greed-hatred-Delusion’ without any residue, the Blessed One has the attribute called ‘Arahang’.
- ‘Because the blessed one guides both human and God communities to free themselves from Suffering in Long mournful ‘Sansara’, just as he has already freed himself from the Suffering which he had endured in mournful ‘Sansara’ by knowing and comprehending the ‘Four Noble Truths’ by his own, the Blessed One has the attribute called ‘Samma~ Sambuddha’.
- ‘Because the blessed one disciplined his ‘body- word- mind’ with eight unique insight (omniscient knowledge) and fifteen unique disciplinary principles, the Blessed One has the attribute ‘Vijja~charana Sampanna’.
- ‘Because of that noble behaviour, as the blessed one is in a unique existence where there is no rebirth, the Blessed One is with the attribute called ‘Sugatha’.
- ‘Because of being able to cease all the worlds that arise in himself by understanding and realising wisely the causes of those worlds to emerge from the entities of the ‘eyes- ears- nose- tongue- body- mind’, the Blessed One is with the attribute called ‘Loka Vidu~’.
- ‘Because of being the most exalted among all the Humans, Gods and in any other worlds, and being the highest great noble that there is no one else who can be superior or comparable to him, the Blessed One has the attribute called ‘Anuththara’.
- ‘Because of disciplining the people only with ‘Loving-Kindness- Compassion- Sympathetic joy- Equanimity’, but not with worldly weapons or intimidation or threat, the Blessed One has the attribute called ‘Purisadamma Sa~rathi’.
- ‘Because of guiding both God and Human communities to gain the knowledge of righteous worldly life and the spiritual life, the Blessed One has the attribute called ‘Saththa~ Devamanussa~nang Buddho’.
- ‘Because of possessing Prestigiousness and prosperity through the power of merits (pin) and Perfect merits (kusal) accumulated in previous lives, the Blessed One has the attribute called ‘Bhagawa~’.
Monks, by remembering these attributes of mine, your fear, panic, and shock will disappear”.
“If you do not remember me, remember the attributes of Dhamma.
- ‘Because the Doctrine has been perfectly preached to both Humans and gods by tangibly understanding by the Buddha, the Dhamma has the attribute called ‘Swa~kkha~tha’,
- ‘As the results can be experienced right from that moment by anyone who practices the Four Noble Truths with understanding and being conscious, the Dhamma has the attribute called ‘Sa~ndrushtihka’,
- ‘As the Dhamma can be understood at any time period and any age by anyone who is conscious without restricting to a time limit or age limit, the Dhamma has the attribute called ‘Aka~lika’,
- ‘As the Dhamma is needed to be understood through practical experience, the Dhamma has the attribute called ‘Ehi Passika’,
- ‘As the Dhamma is needed to be understood by applying that Doctrine to ownself, own thoughts and own actions, the Dhamma has the attribute called ‘O~panaika’,
- ‘As one needs to be a wise person to understand the Dhamma, and recognise the true nature of ‘I’ through an investigation of ownself by applying the Dhamma to ownself, the Dhamma has the attribute called ‘Pachchaththang Vedithabbo Viknknu~hi’.
Monks, by remembering these attributes of Dhamma, your fear, panic and shock will disappear”.
“If you do not remember the attributes of Dhamma, remember the attributes of the Sangha.
- ‘Because of entering into the Eightfold Path with the pure intention of getting meaningful healing for themselves, the Sanggha has the attribute of ‘Supatipatipanna’,
- ‘Because of entering into the Eightfold Path with a straight determination exclusive from worldly pursuits, the Sanggha has the attribute called ‘Ujupatipanna’,
- ‘Because of entering into the Eightfold Path with the knowledge of Suffering, the Cause of Suffering, the Cessation of Suffering, and the Path to End the Suffering, the Sanggha has the attribute of ‘Kna~yapatipanna’,
- ‘Because of entering into the Eightfold Path with the pure intention of eliminating the defilements, ‘Greed-Hatred-Delusion’ etc., the Sanggha has the attribute of ‘Sa~michipatipanna’.
Being with those attributes, the Blessed One’s celibate disciples, known as the ‘jewel of Sanggha’, who are in the eight highest existences as four pairs of four fruits on the path to ‘Nirwana’,
- ‘Because of carrying over and sharing the Buddha’s Dharma with humans and Gods, those celibate disciples, known as the ‘jewel of Sanggha’, deserve to be offered four basic necessities. That attribute is called ‘A~huneiya’,
- ‘Because of being so inspirational as to bestow blessings upon the creatures, those celibate disciples, known as the ‘jewel of Sanggha’, deserve to be offered four basic necessities. That attribute is called ‘Pa~huneiya’,
- ‘Because of being so inspirational as to be accumulated merits through worshipping and offerings by the Humans, Gods and all other Creatures for their prosperity of this life and the hereafter, as well as qualify to receive the sacrifices made for the welfare of the creature’s deceased relatives. That attribute is called ‘Dakkhineiya’,
- ‘Because of being so inspirational as to be worshipped with honour as they dwell being celibate with disciplining their body- word, and mind. That attribute is called ‘Anjalikarani~ya’,
- ‘Because of being so inspirational than any other sacred object in this world as to be accumulated merits through worshipping and offerings by Humans, Gods and all other Creatures, that attribute is called ‘Puknknakkeththang Anuththarang’,
Monks, by remembering the virtues of this ‘Sanggha’ who are with full of these attributes, your fear, panic, and shock will disappear”.
“What is the reason for that?
Monks, because the Thathahgatha, who has cleansed all defilements by eliminating ‘Greed- Hatred- Delusion’, is not terrified, panicked, or fleeing”.
Having explained thus, the Blessed One then addressed everyone:
“Monks, those of you who live in a forest or a base of a tree or a deserted area will have no fear when you remember the attributes of the ‘Buddha’, who has realised the Four Noble Truths by own and preached them to the world.
If you do not remember the attributes of the Buddha, who is the greatest to the world, remember the attributes of ‘Dhamma’, which perfectly guide the route to liberation from the mournful ‘Sansara’ (Birth and Death Cycle).
If you do not remember the attributes of the Dhamma, which perfectly guide the route to liberation from the mournful ‘Sansara’, remember the attributes of ‘Sanggha’, who is so inspirational than any other sacred object in this world as to be accumulated merits by anyone, through worshipping and offerings.
Monks, there will be no fear, panic or shock for those of you who remember thus, the ‘Buddha-Dhamma-Sanggha’”.
The Blessed One is called by the attribute of ‘Vijja~charana Sampanno’ because he has disciplined according to omniscient knowledge.
That omniscient knowledge is the eight pearls of insight unique to a Buddha.
Because of having maintained fifteen types of virtuous disciplines according to that knowledge, that attribute is called ‘Vijja~charana Sampanno’.

| Parachiththa Vija~nana Kna~naya | The ability to read other people’s minds |
| Purve~niwa~sa~nusmruthi Kna~naya | The insight of knowing all past existences of ownself and any others |
| Divyachakshura~bhi~ Kna~naya | The insight of knowing how beings wander from one existence to another after death according to the repercussions of their own deeds in the ‘Sansara’. |
| Ashrawakshaya Kna~naya | The insight of knowing how to eliminate impurities |
The fifteen distinct virtuous disciplinary actions based on the Buddhas’ omniscient knowledge

| Bahushrutha Bava | Learning and developing the knowledge of many things |
| Vi~ryaya | Unshakable determination with a valiant effort |
| Smruthiya | The unique excellent memorising ability |
| Praknkna~va | Advanced ability to contemplate wisely |
| Prathama Dhya~naya | Pacified dwelling with deep reasoning and analysing at a meditative plane where happiness and comfort arise through relaxation by separating from Sensual pleasure and defilements. |
| Dvithi~ya Dhya~naya | Dwelling calmly without reasoning or investigating, once the inner has been purified from defilement as, there is no need to investigate or contemplate anymore to comprehend. |
| Thruthi~ya Dhya~naya | Dwelling in good physical health, good conscious, and a comforting abode with the neutralised mind. |
| Chathurthah Dhya~naya | Dwelling with a pure conscious and neutral mind freeing from clinging or conflicts to even current comfort, abandoning all the previous willingnesses and reluctance. |
