Anguththara Nikaya- Thika Nipatha pali- Apayika Waggaya
Remember that this is the sutra preached by the Buddha, showing how a disciple should discipline his speech, body and mind.
“Monks, in order to have great discipline, three types of disciplines must be practised.
What are those three?
- Disciplined by the Body
- Disciplined by the Word
- Disciplined by the Mind
“Monks, what does ‘disciplined by the Body’ mean?
A monk should refrain from harming or killing the living beings,
Should avoid taking anything that belongs to others and was not given,
Should refrain from lust,
This is referred to as ‘Disciplined by Body’.
“Monks, what does ‘disciplined by the Word’ mean?
A monk should refrain from lying,
Should refrain from gossiping,
Should refrain from using brutal words,
Should refrain from using hollow words,
This is referred to as ‘Disciplined by Word’.
Monks, what does ‘disciplined by Mind’ mean?
The monk eliminates ‘Greed- Hatred- Delusion’ completely according to the Dhamma he comprehends wisely. He frees himself from the notions which he has been creating delusionally, thinking ‘I and Mine’ so far. He liberates from his mind and wisdom completely and completes the task that needs to be done by freeing from the final half of the ten fundamental bonds of ‘Sansara’.
This is referred to as ‘Disciplined by Mind’.
The wise man who has banished the attachments by disciplining the mind, body and speech is called ‘the Arahath who has banished all defilements’.
